The book Tarzan of the Apes, the first in the Tarzan series, made American writer Edgar Burroughs (1875–1950) famous. Tarzan was born into the family of the British Lord Greystoke, who, together with his wife, was abandoned in the wild jungles of Africa by sea-robbers who had thrown them off a ship.
